Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • NUE expects fourth-quarter earnings to remain stable or improve modestly on stronger realized steel pricing.
  • NUE targets 2026 shipment growth near the upper end of 5-10%, driven by infrastructure and data center.
  • NUE backlogs rose 25%, while $1.6 billion in quarterly free cash flow supports shareholder returns.

Nucor Corporation (NUE - Free Report) emphasized broad-based steel demand, improving pricing and rising contributions from recent investments during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call. Management expects these trends to support stronger performance in 2027.

Executives also highlighted expanding free cash flow, automotive opportunities and infrastructure-related demand, while addressing cost pressures and seasonal shipment constraints.

NUE Sees Stable Earnings Through Year-End

Chief financial officer Jack Sullivan expects fourth-quarter earnings to be generally in line with or modestly above third-quarter levels, supported by stronger realized pricing.

Steel mills and steel products earnings should remain stable as higher prices offset seasonally weaker shipments and increased costs. Raw materials earnings are expected to decline slightly.

During the third quarter, NUE reported earnings of $5.80 per share, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5.71. Revenues of approximately $11.25 billion surpassed the $10.53 billion consensus estimate.

Nucor Targets Further Shipment Growth

President and chief operating officer Stephen Laxton reiterated expectations for 2026 steel mill shipment growth near the upper end of the company's 5-10% guidance.

Management identified infrastructure investment, manufacturing reshoring, data centers and energy projects as major demand drivers. Chief executive officer Leon Topalian emphasized that data centers represent approximately 15% of companywide backlog.

During the analyst discussion, Goldman Sachs questioned growth opportunities beyond existing capacity. Topalian highlighted broad demand across energy, technology, defense and industrial markets, expressing confidence in further expansion during 2027.

NUE Advances West Virginia and Automotive Expansion

Laxton confirmed that Nucor's West Virginia sheet mill remains on schedule, with production ramping up for early 2027 and a 50% utilization target by year-end.

The Berkeley automotive galvanizing line has begun production and is expected to reach full operating rates by the end of 2027, adding 500,000 tons of annual capacity.

Responding to BNP Paribas, Topalian highlighted Nucor's qualification for exposed automotive steel on a General Motors platform. Sheet Products executive vice president Noah Hanners added that West Virginia could eventually produce approximately 1 million tons of automotive steel, including 100,000 tons of exposed automotive grades.

Nucor Addresses Costs and Pricing Pressures

Sullivan reported higher conversion costs involving energy, freight, consumables and services. Planned outages also affected fixed-cost absorption during the third quarter.

In response to Goldman Sachs, Sullivan warned that conversion costs could increase modestly during the fourth quarter as outages and West Virginia start-up expenses continue.

Meanwhile, Hanners told Barclays that 2027 sheet contracts feature improved pricing terms, including lower discounts and tighter volume provisions. Management expects stronger contractual arrangements to support future performance.

NUE Highlights Backlog Strength in Steel Products

Steel products pretax earnings reached $465 million, supported by a 6% increase in shipments and 7% growth in realized selling prices.

Responding to BNP Paribas, Fabricated Construction Products executive vice president John Hollatz highlighted improving demand across tubular products, joist and deck, metal buildings and insulated panels.

Hollatz noted that overall backlogs increased approximately 25%, with pricing improvements extending into 2027. Separately, Laxton raised the long-term annual EBITDA target for the Towers & Structures business to approximately $200 million from $150 million.

Nucor Emphasizes Cash Flow and Shareholder Returns

Sullivan reported third-quarter free cash flow of approximately $1.6 billion, bringing the nine-month total to nearly $2.7 billion.

Capital expenditures are expected to finish 2026 at or slightly below $2.5 billion, with further reductions anticipated in 2027 as major construction projects conclude.

Nucor returned $629 million to shareholders during the third quarter and reaffirmed its commitment to distributing at least 40% of annual net earnings through dividends and repurchases.

NUE Maintains Focus on Execution

Management's outlook reflected confidence in sustained demand, expanding production capabilities and improved cash generation.

However, executives acknowledged continued start-up spending, higher operating costs and seasonal shipment pressures as important considerations heading into 2027.
